What is a Grounds Maintenance Volunteer?

Our team of Grounds Maintenance Volunteers assist the Far Ings Education Centre staff with ongoing outdoor maintenance, from repairing and updating the site furniture (gates, fences, seating areas, etc) to vegetation management (especially during the summer) and development of conservation areas and outdoor teaching facilities.

What’s involved?

  • Regular safety checks of site furniture
  • Repairing items (within capability and in line with approved processes)
  • Ensuring paths and teaching areas are free from obstructions and encroaching vegetation
  • Dealing with maintenance emergencies in a timely manner and within H&S guidelines
  • Liaising with staff as to maintenance priorities
  • Litter picking as required
  • Working within the Volunteer Charter and Trust policies and procedures

Who would this role suit?

Essential skills/experience:

  • Use of hand tools and grounds maintenance
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety in the workplace

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Some knowledge of carpentry would be advantageous
  • Practical conservation experience
  • Strimmer/brushcutter qualification
  • Some wildlife/botanical ID skills
