What is a Wilder Welcome Volunteer?

The Far Ings Visitor Centre is open to the public five days a week (Wednesday to Sunday), providing information and interpretation, events, public facilities and a small retail operation. Our Wilder Welcome Volunteers spend a morning or afternoon welcoming visitors to the centre and helping them get the most from their visit to the reserve, as well as helping out in the wildlife gift shop.

What’s involved?

• Welcoming people to the Far Ings Visitor Centre
• Engaging with visitors about the work of the Wildlife Trust
• Providing information to give visitors a deeper appreciation of Far Ings’ wonderful wildlife
• Serving in the wildlife gift shop, including restocking and rotating shop stock
• Acting in accordance with the risk assessment for the task provided
• Adherence to the Volunteer Charter, policies, procedures and guidelines
• Undertaking in-house training appropriate to the role

Who would this role suit?

Essential skills/experience:

• An interest in nature and the natural world
• Ability to communicate effectively with the public
• Some retail experience
• Sensible regard for health and safety
• The ability to work within guidelines set by the Education team

Desirable skills/experience:

• Familiarity with Far Ings and its wildlife
• Understanding and support of the Wildlife Trust's principles of reserve management
• An understanding of the needs of the public and native wildlife
