Parish: Anderby

OS: 122 • GR: TF 556749  • Map ref: 45
2.90 hectares (7.10acres)  • Leasehold 1959
Habitat type: Marsh/Wetland

Location and Access

The reserve lies between the coast road and the sea wall about 1.6 km (1 mile) south of Anderby Creek. There is no access to the reserve, which can be viewed from the Wolla Bank car park and access road.

Description and Management

Having been partially scraped for clay for the repair of sea defences following the east-coast floods of 1953, the area is now an extensive reedbed. Reed warbler, sedge warbler, reed bunting and whitethroat all nest. Bearded tits are occasional visitors in winter. Marsh harriers occur in spring and short-eared owls in winter. There are small pools and grassy areas with sea club-rush and sea couch. Small stands of sea-buckthorn occur here and in the Wolla Bank Pit, which lies on the opposite side of the road. Sea buckthorn attracts wintering thrushes when in fruit.
