Description and Management
The reserve consists of old grassland on heavy clay soil of a type now rare in the county. Meadow plants, such as great burnet, saw-wort and devil's-bit scabious, are abundant, while the green-winged orchid survives in small numbers. A woodland edge on all sides enhances the value of the reserve for birds and insects. Woodcock, great spotted and green woodpeckers, nightingale, grasshopper and other warblers nest in the adjoining woodland and scrub. In recent years 26 species of butterflies have been recorded, including purple hairstreak, white admiral and speckled wood.
