Our natural world is precious. We all depend on it for food, clean water and a comfortable climate. The next Government and Parliament will face many challenges. How they respond to these will affect the future of our wildlife - on land, at sea and in our local areas.
Nationally
The Wildlife Trusts have contacted the leaders of the three main parties at Westminster to ask them to include a commitment to introducing a White Paper on Nature in their manifestos. The White Paper should identify the policy changes needed to restore our natural environment and ecosystems. We have also urged the party leaders to commit to implementing the Marine Act and securing the designation of Marine Protected Areas by 2012.
Locally
The General Election provides an ideal opportunity to find out what your local candidates think about local wildlife and how the natural environment will be protected and restored.
We have contacted parliamentary candidates from the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats for their responses to the following three questions:
- If elected, what will you do to help the natural environment of your constituency?
- How will your party put nature at the heart of the way we manage and use our land?
- What is your party's policy towards the marine environment, including the designation of Marine Protected Areas?
